Sophisticated home control solutions

The client wanted sophisticated home control solutions that offered the latest in technology, but was simple to use. They enjoy socialising, with their home frequently filled with friends, so having a solution that everyone could use with ease, enhancing the entertainment and fun was essential. They wanted to control the lighting easily from the keypads and minimise the number of control devices by having one simple to use interface. The client expressed a desire to use a remote control as the favoured device, especially for the visual solution. They also wanted to ensure that their home was future proof, so they could expand or change with advancing technology.

Design phase

We were involved with the project from the design phase, working closely with the architect, lighting designer, interior designer, electrical contractors and of course the project manager to ensure we were all working to the same vision. The project was very much about using local trades people with traditional skills, so home automation was a new concept to many on site.

The solution selected was Lutron Homeworks lighting control with an option for Lutron blinds, high definition distribution system using Wyrestorm, Autonomic audio solution and all controlled through one home control solution, RTi that can be completely designed around the client’s needs, making it easier to use.

Lighting to set the scene and integrate with security

The project went well as we were able to work closely with the lighting designer, participating in lighting choice so that we could ensure compatibility with the Lutron system and provide fantastic lighting scenes that would enhance the living space. The Lutron offered excellent integration with the alarm system so both are triggered in the event of a security alert. The lighting was also used to enhance some design features in the garden and the water well in the house. The client requested the ability to control the cellar door via the Lutron keypad which was easily achieved and avoided the need for further switches. By using sensors we were able to create a night welcome mode as friends and family enter the gate and the client had dimmed lo level lighting to pave the way from the bedroom to the kitchen at night.

The wifi coverage proved a challenge with the concrete floors and steelworks. The heat map revealed the most appropriate bandwidth and wireless access point requirements to create a mesh network.

Once again we were invited to a completion party and it was great to see the client and others enjoying all the automated products and all discreetly hidden for the ultimate clutter free environment.
